Long-Term Care Solutions

Long-Term Care Solutions

Long-term care (LTC) insurance covers the cost of assistance with daily living (like bathing, dressing, and eating) at home or in facilities, which standard health insurance and Medicare do not. It protects your savings and gives you control over where you receive care.

How Coverage Triggers

Policies begin paying out when you are medically certified as needing help with at least two Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) or have a severe cognitive impairment like Alzheimer’s disease. Coverage types typically include:

Home Care: Care in your home or the home of a family member.

Community Living: Adult day care or assisted living facilities.

Facility Care: Full custodial care in a nursing home.

Types of Policies

Traditional LTC: Standalone policies where you pay a monthly or annual premium. If you never need care, you do not get your money back. Premiums can — and frequently do — increase.

Hybrid (Linked-Benefit) Policies: The most popular modern option. You roll a life insurance policy or annuity into an LTC rider. You pay a lump sum or fixed payments to lock in premiums, and if you never need care, the death benefit goes to your heirs.

Costs & Eligibility

Costs are highly dependent on your age, health status, and coverage level at the time of application.

Best Time to Buy: Most people buy these policies between ages 50 and 64. If you wait until you are 70 or older, premiums rise steeply, and pre-existing conditions may prevent you from qualifying altogether.

Alternatives to Consider

Self-Insuring: Using your own accumulated assets, savings, or home equity if you have significant wealth.

Medicaid: The government program that covers nursing home care, but only after you have spent down most of your personal assets.

Short-Term Care Insurance: Shorter coverage periods (often one year or less) with less strict medical underwriting requirements.
